White grape varieties
The grape varieties used in the production of Rhône Valley wines
White grape varieties
Aligoté
A rare grape variety in the Rhône Valley Vineyards, Aligoté is only present in the Diois vineyards, and allowed in the blends of Châtillon-en-Diois AOC and Crémant de Die AOC wines.
Bourboulenc
A key to freshness in white Rhone blends, Bourboulenc produces fresh, light wines with floral notes.
Carignan blanc
Traditionally exclusive to the Tavel appellation, white Carignan is a "VIFA", une "Variété d'Intérêt à Fin d'Adaptation", authorized on an experimental basis in the blends of the AOC Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages.
Chardonnay
There is no white grape variety more famous in the world than Chardonnay. However, few know that it is present in the Rhône Valley. It is cultivated in the Châtillon-en-Diois appellation, producing supple white wines.
Clairette blanche
Clairette is one of the oldest grape varieties in the south of France. It is typically Mediterranean. Sometimes vinified alone, as in AOC Clairette de Bellegarde, it can also be blended with other grape varieties, bringing freshness, lightness, and bitter notes providing complexity and balance on the palate.
Floreal
Floreal is what we call VIFA: Variété d'Intérêt à Fin d'Adaptation, meaning it is authorized in certain appellations on an experimental basis, in particular to meet environmental and societal expectations.
Grenache blanc
An emblematic grape variety of the southern Rhône Valley, Grenache blanc is the most widely planted white grape variety in the region. It is also known as Garnacha blanca in Spain, and is a mutation of the Grenache family (along with Grenache noir and Grenache gris).
Macabeu
Also called Maccabeu in Roussillon, Viura in Rioja, or more generally Macabeo in Spain, Macabeu is only present in AOC Costières de Nîmes. It brings volume to the blends.
Marsanne
An emblematic grape variety for white wines from the northern Rhône Valley, where it is often blended with Roussanne, Marsanne produces powerful wines with floral and hazelnut aromas which develop particularly with ageing.
Muscat blanc à petits grains
This white grape variety, probably of Greek origin, is the exclusive grape variety for the fortified wines (Vins Doux Naturels) of Beaumes-de-Venise, but also the majority grape variety for Clairette de Die, using the Ancestral Method.
Picardan
Indigenous to the Rhône Valley, this white grape variety is today very little used and very rare. It is exclusive to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
Piquepoul blanc
It has several synonyms, including Picpoul, Picapoll, Picpouille, Avillo or Picapulla, but it is spelled Piquepoul in the Rhône Valley. It produces a neutral, dry white wine with finesse and freshness, appreciated in blending.
Rolle (previously Vermentino)
Native to Italy where it is known as Vermentino, and also present in Corsica as Vermentinu, Rolle is a grape variety that brings lightness and freshness to wines, as well as a complex and elegant aromatic bouquet.
Roussanne
A traditional grape variety from the northern crus of the Rhône Valley, where it is often associated with Marsanne, Roussanne is also grown in the southern part of the region. It produces elegant, fine, floral and complex wines.
Ugni blanc
Ugni blanc i is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the world. It is notably the grape variety which serves as the basis for Cognac spirits. Outside of France, its name is Trebbiano toscano, in homage to its origins.
Viognier
The second most planted white grape variety in the Rhône Valley, and star grape variety of the northernmost wines of Condrieu and Château-Grillet: Viognier is renowned for its finesse, its elegance, and its captivating bouquet of fresh yellow fruits.
The art of blending
The winegrowers of Rhône Valley vineyards nurture a special kind of art: blending the various kinds of soil, exposure and grape varieties that compose their vineyards.
Locally-crafted blends have inspired winemakers across the world; in fact, the term « Rhône Blend » is used worldwide to describe any Rhône inspired red wines.
Quite the accolade!
3 colours
Thanks to the diversity of its soils, grape varieties, climates and exposures, the Rhône Valley produces a diversity of red, white and rosé wines. Whether fruity, full-bodied, spicy, robust, structured... red wines pair well with all kinds of cuisines, from barbecue to rich dishes in sauces. Floral or fruity, lively or round, whites are also magnificently paired with a wide range of recipes. Rosés, whether fresh and fruity, or spicy and flavourful, are known for their multiple delicious styles.
